The Roof of South America

At the dizzying height of two and a half miles above sea level; La Paz appears to float among the clouds surrounded by the towering peaks of the Andes.

How did you breathe way up there? I thought people who climbed mountains had to take oxygen, and you were basically on top of Mt. Rainier.

I'd really like you to meet the Bolivian family in our ward. They're from La Paz, and will be going back there at the end of December. It would be cool for you to talk with them... After all, I was willing to drive up 10 hours alone with 4 kids for you, and I'd still do it if Tom weren't coming... :)

Typically oxygen would not be needed on a climb below 20,000 feet. People have even been known to climb 29 thousand foot Mt. Everest without oxygen! You still have about 50% of the oxygen that you would at sea level at a height of 18,000 feet. La Paz sits between 11,000 and 14,000 feet. This varies depending on where in the city you are.
